However, his relationship with BAM – the Badminton Association of Malaysia – is fascinating. Jia once quit the association and, therefore, his national team, opting to play independently rather than facing “the pressure of being on the national side.” It was a decision that shocked many Malaysian badminton fans, but one that received empathy from the then-world No. 1 Viktor Axelsen (Denmark), who posted that “it’s his career and his life after all.” Having expressed its “extreme sadness” at Jia’s move, the association promptly slapped him with a two-year ban, which meant that Malaysia’s golden boy could not participate in any significant competitions – particularly those organized by the BWF. BAM eventually had a sit-down with Jia in January 2022 and confidentially hashed out a deal, thus restoring Malaysia’s badminton hopes. The young shuttler won the 2022 Badminton Asia Championships, entering his name into an illustrious list of just six Malaysian male singles to have achieved the feat.
